There’s no way around that.ĭo you have that answer now? Is it good that you did this? These are family members, this is my life, this is my mother’s story, and it’s airing publicly, exposing vulnerabilities. The biggest challenge I’ve dealt with and had to ask myself throughout the making of this is whether I’m doing good. There’s been a lot of good news and response to the story. Madison Hamburg: Lately, I’ve been relieved. Observer: First, I want to ask, genuinely, how are you? Observer went deeper with Hamburg in an interview to find out how his family has been now that most of the episodes have aired, how his aunt Conway Beach (who discovered Barbara’s body and was at the center of the third episode, “Sisters”) has responded to the series and how he was legally able to use all those secret recordings with his father and the Madison Police Department. “I feel like it’s my chance to define it,” says Hamburg, “and also to be whole again, to stop living this double life.” It never defined him-“I didn’t have to walk around with the label of the kid whose mom was murdered me”-and now people will see the story unfold almost as its unfolding for Hamburg himself. It turns out that Hamburg’s keeping the secret of his mom’s murder and the making of this documentary from even his friends for this long has worked in the show’s favor. “I really wanted it to be from my perspective as much as possible.” ![]() “If I tried to tell it like it’s in the past or tried to distort what’s going on or say that I think this person did it and here’s why,” he says, “I’m going to lose the trust of the audience. His advice was to invite the audience into everything Hamburg was going through, because it would be the most honest way to tell a story full of dishonesties, twists, turns and many unanswered questions. Hamburg opened up the fourth wall and took his cue from an editor who worked on Minding the Gap, the 2018 documentary about skateboarders. Otherwise it wouldn’t accomplish that goal of subverting those conventions.” “Once I partnered with HBO last year,” says Hamburg, “I realized that this was going to be a really public thing and that the documentary at some point had to ask questions. ![]() For better or worse, it has turned into riveting television and a docuseries that gives the true crime genre a new spin into ethically ambiguous territory. Hamburg began his work on the story as a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design and has since dedicated himself to exploring the complexities of family secrets through documentary filmmaking-a much more expositive task than, say, therapy. Subscribe to Observer’s Keeping Watch Newsletter It’s a fraught and complicated journey following Hamburg as he tries to find answers surrounding his mother’s brutal murder while also absolving the people he loves and mending a fractured community. HBO’s four-part documentary series Murder on Middle Beach, which premiered on HBO on November 15 and is available to stream on HBO Max, is Hamburg’s first major project as a filmmaker. ![]()

![]() ![]() At this day the Honours, which Mrs Granger so cleverly rescued, may be seen in the Castle of Edinburgh. At night they were safely buried under the pulpit of her husband's church. ![]() The general granted permission, and Mrs Granger brought out the Honours covered up with the lint. Then he got his wife to ask leave of the English general to enter the castle to bring out some bundles of lint. First he spread a report that they had been taken abroad. Fearing that the stronghold would be taken, Mr Granger, a minister in the neighbourhood, devised a plan for getting them out safely. The English knew that they were there, and laid siege to the castle. Monk was also very anxious to get hold of the "Honours of Scotland," that is, the crown, sceptre, and sword of state but, owing to the boldness and cleverness of a woman, he was disappointed.Īfter the battle of Dunbar the Honours had been placed for safety in the Castle of Dunnottar, a very strong castle on the coast of Kincardineshire. So Monk sent off to England the Chair of State in which the Scottish kings had sat, the robes they had worn, and all the documents which showed that Scotland had been a free kingdom. Edward had carried off the Stone of Destiny on which the kings of Scots had been crowned, as well as the Holy Cross of St Margaret and all the public records. To show that Scotland was no longer an independent kingdom, Monk did exactly what Edward I. Edward I., indeed, had conquered Scotland but he held it only for a short time, whereas the English under Cromwell held it for nine years. ![]() So the English under Cromwell had done what no king of England had succeeded in doing. It was in August of the year 1651 that Cromwell had marched after Charles, and by the end of that year Monk had subdued the whole country from the Tweed to the Pentland Firth. The only town that offered him any resistance was Dundee but there was such a massacre of the inhabitants after it was taken that no other town dared to oppose him. As there was no Scottish army to prevent him, he had very little difficulty in taking town after town, and placing English garrisons in them. Monk at once set about subduing the country, Highlands and Lowlands. When he marched after Charles to Worcester, he left behind him a part of his army under the command of one of his best generals, General Monk. There never was a time, therefore, when Scotland could be more easily conquered than now.Īnd Cromwell was determined to subdue Scotland and make it part of England, as so many English kings had tried to do and failed. What made things still worse was, that the three parties in the country-the Royalists, the Resolutioners, and the Protesters-could never agree to combine for the defence of their country. Her last army had been destroyed at Worcester her best general had been taken prisoner and the king was gone. Scotland was now still more helpless than she had been after the battle of Dunbar. ![]() It may contain outdated ideas and language that do not reflect TOTA’s opinions and beliefs.įrom A Short History of Scotland by Peter Hume Brown, 1908. ![]() Ram’s 2500 lineup ditches the independent front suspension of most mid-sized and 1500-grade trucks, offering a wide range of potential packages for everything from job site tool chests to toy haulers and fifth-wheel gooseneck trailering. Stay tuned to Moparinsiders and 5thGenRams for all the latest news and information as it becomes available and to see how our Long Term 20 holds up.For truck buyers who prioritize towing capacity and off-road articulation, beefy frames and solid front axles make Heavy Duty pickups a must. When we reached out to Ram for comment about the Regular Cabs and 6’4 RamBox we were told that they have nothing to announce on that matter at this time. At that point, there would be no reason for it not to become available on the 1500s as well.Īdmittedly this is pure (educated) speculation on our part. It is not likely that Ram will drop the 6’4 RamBox option on the Heavy Dutys meaning that when the new HDs debut for 2022 we should see the RamBox option return to the 6’4 bed. (5thGenRams).Īgain with the older trucks, you had better economies of scale as the 1500 and Heavy Duties shared a common bed. While we have gotten a lot of questions about when the 6’4 RamBox would become available the vast majority of trucks previously sold with the RamBox option checked were Crew Cab 5’7 box models. The majority of half ton trucks sold are crew cabs with the shorter (5’7 ) box. Turning our attention to the 6’4 bed with the RamBox option we believe that we won’t see it until 2022 for many of the same reasons. Until then count on the Ram 1500 Classic as being the only Regular Cab choice for Ram half-ton buyers. If we end up getting a 5th Generation Ram 1500 Regular Cab we firmly believe this is when it will happen. Regular Cabs are the trucks that put up the maximum towing and payload numbers and competition for the largest numbers is stiff. ![]() We do know that based on Ram’s 5-year product plan shown last year that an all-new Ram Heavy Duty is set to debut for 2022, This is when we will see the Heavy Duty move over to the 5th generation Ram cab and box and it is unlikely that Ram would leave the Regular Cab market if their competitors are still in it. With Warren Truck running Ram 1500 Classics, Saltillo, Mexico running Ram HDs and Ram 1500 Classic Regular Cabs and Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) at capacity building 20 Quad and Crew Cabs there is nowhere to build a 20 Regular Cab. Another reason that we haven’t seen a Regular Cab is that they currently have nowhere to build them. With Regular Cabs accounting for only 5-percent of total sales across 1500 line and HDs we believe that Ram has decided it was not worth the investment to do a 5th Gen Regular Cab at this time. The new Ram Heavy Dutys also debuted back in January and while they are heavily revised trucks they carry on using the 4th generation cab and box. The Ram 1500 Classic is available as a Regular Cab, Quad Cab, and Crew Cab. Originally thought to go out of production this summer we are hearing they might actually run that truck all the way up until the 2022 model year. The “DS” platform Ram 1500 (known as the Ram 1500 Classic now) has gotten a stay of execution. ![]() ![]() Since that time, a multitude of things has changed. Warren Truck has been producing Dodge and Ram pickups since 1938 (and currently builds the 20 Classic.) At that time the plan was to discontinue the Ram 1500 Classic around the summer of 2019 and the all-new Ram Heavy Duty was to move to that plant after a thorough re-tooling for the 2020 model year. On January 11th, 2018, the late Sergio Marchionne (former CEO of FCA) had stated that Ram Heavy Duty production would move from Saltillo, Mexico to the Warren Truck Plant in Warren, Michigan. That article was based on some information we had at the time and some speculation on our part, we are now sure that a 5th generation Regular Cab will not happen for 2020. Last year, wrote this article regarding the Regular Cabs stating we expected to see them to show up for the 2020 model year. So far there has been no official word or confirmation from Ram Truck about a Regular Cab or 6’4 RamBox option coming to the new Ram 1500. Today, we are going to answer those questions to the best of our ability with what we know so far. The two questions that our sister site gets asked the most are when we can expect to see the 5th generation Ram Regular Cab or the RamBox available on the 6’4 box. ![]() ![]() ![]() Eliza, who has, she tells us, "never been the type to try and grab the spotlight," is the conventionally feminine one. Angelica, who stands center stage as she raps, "I’ve been reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine / So men say that I’m intense or I’m insane," is the rebellious one. Angelica and Eliza fall neatly into the old conventional/rebellious dichotomy. The trap of the two-woman love triangle is not one that Hamilton entirely avoids. Hamilton avoids the trap of good woman versus bad woman - almost Surely no man has ever been asked whether he's a Freddy or a Henry, but you can take a BuzzFeed quiz to determine whether you’re an Eponine or a Cosette. But the key difference between two-man love triangles and two-woman love triangles is that Freddy and Henry are not being made to stand in for all men. There are musical love triangles with two men in them, of course, like My Fair Lady, where Eliza Doolittle chooses between Henry Higgins and Freddy. It suggests there are two ways to be a woman, one of which is acceptable and one of which is despicable. The problem with this narrative structure is that it asks the audience to sort all women into two types and then pick one of those types to hate: This kind of woman is okay, but not this kind. Either one of them might be too much of a bitch. The conventionally feminine one is too dull or too passive or too boring, maybe, or the rebellious one is too slutty or too shrill or too angry. Sometimes a musical tips the scales by giving the good woman the good song - everyone loves Eponine and her soulful "On My Own," but it takes a rare soul to fall in love with Cosette after her forgettable "In My Life." The subtext is clear: One of these women is good, and the other is bad. Sometimes the bad woman turns out to be secretly cold, like the Baroness with her villainous plan to send the von Trapp children to boarding school ("Baroness Machiavelli!" another character exclaims). Jekyll and Hyde’s Emma is chaste and pure, while Lucy is a prostitute who tells her customers to "bring on the men."Īnd traditionally, musicals are not shy or subtle about telling their audiences which of the two women is worth rooting for. In the film version of The Sound of Music, the immaculately coiffed Baroness watches in horror as Maria exuberantly overturns a rowboat in her homemade dress. In Les Misérables, Cosette is obedient and passive, while Eponine brawls with her father in the streets. ![]() Traditionally in musical theater, when two women are points in a love triangle, one of them is sweetly, traditionally feminine and the other rebels moderately and attractively against gender roles. The classic love triangle formula gives us one good woman and one bad woman The Schuyler sisters follow that love triangle formula closely, right up until they don’t. Part of the reason for this confusion - is the musical making a feminist statement? Being horrifically regressive? Are the Schuyler sisters boring? Are they fascinating? - is that their story arc has the structure of a very old and not very feminist musical theater trope: the two-woman love triangle in which one woman is good and the other is bad. Two Gay Matts) opine that "this show is all about the bitches." New York magazine insists that the show’s treatment of its women "invites questions." The New York Times says, "We love, but love, the assertive revolutionary women." Elsewhere in the New Yorker, Hilton Als writes that the Schuyler sisters are the weakest part of the show, calling them "plot points in silk," while YouTube critics Matt Steele and Matt Palmer (a.k.a. In the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan is happy to announce that the Schuyler sisters are "not politically correct" because they are not "forced to adopt the usual modern scattershot bitterness at their plight." In a New Yorker article on the women of Hamilton, Michael Shulman approvingly calls the Schuyler sisters "almost" feminist. No one can quite decide what Hamilton is doing with the Schuyler sisters. ![]() And at the play’s conclusion, a somber Aaron Burr sings, "They say Angelica and Eliza were both at his side when he died." Throughout the rest of the show the Schuyler sisters weave in and out of Hamilton’s life, reminding him of the world that exists outside of the policy he’s writing. The sisters meet young Hamilton early in Act I and are both instantly smitten, but perceptive, quick-thinking Angelica decides to encourage Hamilton to pursue sweet, kind Eliza rather than go after him herself.
